HARVEY HUMBER’S FINAL COMPETITION

Counties Manukau Gymnastics hosted the Kerrin Bishop (KB) Memorial Competition during the weekend. The annual event was first held in the early ‘80s. It had always been held over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Unfortunately Covid19 restrictions had twice postponed this year’s event. Due to limitations to training and travel, it took on a different format to reflect the limited opportunity for gymnasts to train and compete this year. It is part of a nationally coordinated ‘Super Series’ of competitions around the country. 194 gymnasts came from the Auckland region to compete in Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics discipline in the two-day event.

Counties Manukau Gymnastics gymnasts based at the Pulman Recreation Centre, had many successes in the competition. With the change to an apparatus only competition, they had places at the top three of each level competed.

It was a significant event for Harvey Humber, the most senior male gymnast in the club. It was his final competition. Harvey finished his gymnastic career doing what he loves best, which is competing and have fun while doing it. Even though there hasn’t been much happening for him this year, his request was to do one final competition before retiring and KB Memorial was just perfect as it was his home event. The support from his family and friends, as well as some of his old competitors and gym mates, was amazing. He really enjoyed himself and was very happy to have had the opportunity to compete one last time with a great performance on Floor and the High Bar.
